Beautiful, popular Jane Freeman awakens in the hospital with no memory of what happened the night she was struck by a hit-and-run driver. Thrown by the collision into a rosebush, Jane is unable to move or speak. As mobility and memories begin to return, Jane realizes that someone has tried to kill her, and it has to be someone she knows well. The fact that no one believes the threats she is receiving complicates the thorny puzzle. Compulsively readable, the novel bristles with red herrings, leading readers down one tempting plot branch after another, each one blooming with plausibility. The characters are skillfully cultivated through flashbacks, and the insecure, people-pleasing Jane grows believably as she takes on the mystery. Jaffe has an especially deft hand with teen dialogue, and clues are organically revealed as each friend visits the hospital room. The motivation of the perpetrator is a stretch, but the revelation provides rich soil for discussion. A sure bet for teen mystery fans. Grades 8-12. --Lynn Rutan

Review

"Jaffe manages the suspense marvelously while also unfolding Jane's emotional life...a winner." --Kirkus
